I Don’t Believe in Quitting Your 9-5
I don’t believe in quitting your 9-5.
In the 70s, my dad was working in real estate. While he was achieving great things, he decided that just doing real estate wasn't fulfilling enough. Luckily, his boss knew him well enough to never let that happen.
Instead, at his boss’s suggestion, my dad would work part-time and spend the rest of his days working on something he was passionate about.
With free time on his hands, my dad created inspirational day-planners filled with life learning material to help people achieve a competitive edge. Those products have sold close to a million copies, and their clients include four U.S. presidents and entire sports leagues.
Around the same time, Thurman Munson, the NY Yankees catcher and team captain, tragically passed away in a plane crash.
Knowing my dad was good at gathering people, Thurman’s wife and teammates asked him to plan a charity dinner in Thurman’s honor. They have now been hosting the charity dinner for 41 years, helping countless people since they started.
My dad didn’t have to quit his job to leave a major impact on those around him, and I don’t believe any of us have to, either.
Rather, how can we be creative with the skills we’ve gained through our careers and invest that expertise towards our passions?
Thanks, Dad, for always being my biggest inspiration.
